Georgetown Continues Surge With Win Over Villanova

Jan 29, 2011 3:55 PM

No. 20 Georgetown continued their hot play with a win over No. 7 Villanova at The Pavilion.

The Hoyas have won four straight after dropping three consecutive games earlier this month.

"We wanted to concentrate on getting the ball to Austin [Freeman]," point guard Chris Wright said. "It's stupid not to give him the ball."

Freeman, who finished with 30 points, scored 10 of Georgetown's final 12 points.

The Wildcats have lost three of four overall and dropped to 0-4 this season when being held under 70 points.

"Georgetown just played better tonight," Villanova coach Jay Wright said. "We made a run at the end but they just played smarter and better early in the game."We are close to being the team we want to be but we definitely are not there yet."

"I don't think anybody else is coming in."

The 6-foot-10, 260-pounder is a native of Middletown, Connecticut and says he doesn't have any visits scheduled.

No. 22 Georgetown Ends Three-Game Skid

Jan 15, 2011 8:07 PM

No. 22 Georgetown ended a three-game losing streak with their victory over Rutgers on Saturday afternoon.

Austin Freeman, Chris Wright and Jason Clark bounced back from a slump to score 53 points in the Hoyas' 74-65 win.

“It’s really good to have these guys back,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. “If we could have won and they still be in their shooting slump, I would take that. But we need these guys to play well for us. That’s not to say we don’t have other options, but we went through a stretch where they were all out of sync."

Thompson III Concerned About Social Media

Jan 7, 2011 12:33 PM

Georgetown coach John Thompson III admits that he's scared by college player's use of social media.

“It’s something that scares me,” Thompson III said. “I do sit down with the team and we have our sports information director sit down with the team (and talk about it). We have given some thought to what some other schools have done and banning them. We haven’t done that, and we try to tell them just to be smart.

“Kids today don’t understand that what you put out there, you can’t take back. But with every emotion —- you have a bad practice, the world can know about it. You’re mad at your teammates, you’re mad at your coach, you’re mad at yourself, you’re mad at your girlfriend, you’re mad at your parents — the world knows about it. So, I think it’s something that’s very dangerous because it’s the nature of college athletics that so many people are following, watching, looking for something to say, trying to bait you into saying things, all at an emotional time. It’s something that worries me.”

After UConn played Pittsburgh last month, sophomore forward Jamaal Coombs-McDaniel vented on his Facebook page. Coombs-McDaniel’s post was something like, ‘I should have taken more time making my college choice,’ intimating that he was unhappy at UConn after a lack of playing time.

”Our basic premise is, do the right thing — don’t embarrass yourselves, don’t embarrass your families,” Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon said. “When you operate under that guideline, it covers a whole lot of things. Ultimately, that’s most important. They know that anything they put out, they’re responsible for, and we’ve made that very clear.”

St. John's Upsets No. 13 Georgetown On Brownlee's Basket

Jan 4, 2011 9:15 AM

St. John's defeated No. 13 Georgetown 61-58 on Monday night, becoming the first team to reach 3-0 in Big East play this season.

The win was the fifth straight for the Red Storm and it ended their streak of 14 straight losses to ranked teams.

Justin Brownlee's rebound and putback gave St. John's the lead for good with 10 seconds left.

"This is what I came to St. John's for," he said. "When you get a rebound like that, a big play, it makes you feel like you were right. Any win over a ranked team is great but we know we still have work to do."

It was Georgetown's second-lowest point total of the season.
